Dear Prospective Applicant:

Thank you for your inquiry and interest in pursuing a graduate degree in Spanish at the University of Florida. Please see the following information on graduate study in Spanish, together with applications (1) for admission and (2) for Graduate Fellowship or Assistantship.

Our M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Spanish have both a Spanish and Spanish American Literature and a Hispanic Linguistics option. Admission to the M.A. requires a bachelors in the language or a closely related field; upper-division undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 or better; and satisfactory scores on the verbal and quantitative sections of the Graduate Record Examination (combined total of 1000 for unconditional admission; conditional admission with scores lower than 1000). Admission to the Ph.D. program requires a M.A. degree in the language or a closely related field, preferably with thesis; graduate grade-point averages of 3.0 or better; and satisfactory scores on the verbal and quantitative sections of the Graduate Record Examination (combined total of 1000 for unconditional admission; conditional admission with scores lower than 1000). If the applicant has a previous graduate or professional degree in the same discipline, then the GRE is not required. If the applicant has a previous graduate or professional degree in a related field, then the GRE requirement is at the department's discretion.

The GRE test is administered by Educational Testing Service at many locations across the country. If you should submit this test, please take it as soon as possible as we must have your score to complete the admission process. Many fellowships also require a GRE score before you can apply.

Please include with your Application for Graduate Fellowship or Assistantship: 1) a brief (typewritten) letter of purpose summarizing your academic and non-academic background (with special reference to the field of intended studies); your goals for graduate study and your professional future; and any other factor that could help us to evaluate your application; 2) An audio tape in which you speak; ( you should not read from a written script) about the following topics (the length of the recording should be 5-7 minutes total): a) relevant aspects of your experiences learning Spanish. Mention any experience in Spanish- speaking countries that you may have had; b) your reasons for applying to our program, and your plans for study at the University of Florida; c) what you would like to do after you obtain your graduate degree (Bilingual applicants may not need to submit this tape: please contact the graduate coordinator).

Once admitted into the M.A. or Ph.D. program, qualified students may be offered a teaching assistantship, at .3 FTE (for most M.A. students) or .5 FTE (for most Ph.D. students). Assistantships at .3 FTE carry a stipend of $8,100 for 9 months. Students appointed at this level teach one five-hour course each semester. Assistantships at .5 FTE carry a stipend of $13,500 for 9 months; incoming students appointed at .5 FTE assume responsibility for three beginning language sections per year (two five-hour courses in the Fall or Spring, and one five-hour course in the other semester). During the one-course semester, half-time teaching assistants are assigned and supervised in certain complementary duties, such as tutoring, preparing classroom materials, or staffing the language technology lab. More advanced Ph.D. students are often asked to teach at the intermediate level, in which case they teach two three-hour classes per semester (for a total of 12 classroom contact hours per year) for a .5 FTE assistantship. All Graduate Teaching Assistants are eligible to apply for waivers of tuition. Service fees cannot be waived (they amount to approximately $34.63 per credit hour for in-state students, and $61.73 per credit hour for out-state students). Highly qualified applicants may be eligible for an annual Supplemental Award up to $2,000.00 for up to three years. Summer employment is usually available for graduate students (approximately $1,750.00 for Summer A or Summer B and $3,500.00 for Summer C).*

If you are a prospective international graduate student, additional requirements apply to your application for admission and financial aid. Please read carefully the "Prospective International Graduate Students" information. Write or call if you have questions about your application.

We will be pleased to have the opportunity to consider your application, including the application for assistantship, letters of recommendation, letter of purpose, recorded reading, and paper in Spanish. The other documentation is to be forwarded to the Admissions Office. Please note that although the deadline for admission to Graduate School is mid-June, we award assistantships on a rolling basis beginning in February. To be considered for an assistantship you must have submitted all applications to the Department and the Admissions office. The sooner these materials are in, the better your chances for an assistantship and/or supplementary award. Some University of Florida fellowships have deadlines in mid-January; to be considered for them, all of your paperwork must have been processed.

If we can answer any questions, feel free to contact
Ms. Terry A. Lopez at tlopez@rll.ufl.edu or leave a message at (352) 392-2016, Ext. 224.
