Master of Arts in French

  1. All entering graduate students must demonstrate oral and written competence in French. A student lacking adequate command of the language, according to the Graduate Admissions Committee, will be asked to take remedial work.

  2. Functional knowledge of a second foreign language is recommended. The minimum level of achievement for functional knowledge is a grade of B in a 3000-level course or proven proficiency (by testing) at this level.

  3. All Master's students will have the opportunity to gain teaching experience through supervised participation in an internship program. The Department attempts to give all candidates further instructional experience through teaching assistantships.

  4. Three Master's programs are available: the M.A. with thesis, the M.A. with research paper, and the M.A. without thesis (a terminal degree). Each program comprises thirty-two credits.

  5. Two options are available in the program. Option A emphasizes literature, while option B emphasizes language and linguistic studies and proficiency.

  6. The Master's student may elect a minor by taking at least six credits in the minor area in courses at the 3000-level or higher. Credits for the minor count among the overall total of 32 credits.

  7. By the end of the second semester, the Master's student will select a supervisory committee chairperson with whose help a supervisory committee will be constituted. This committee will guide the student through the rest of the program.

  8. All Master's candidates will also take a written comprehensive examination based on readings drawn from a list of texts. This examination ideally takes place in the candidate's fourth semester of study. It is given only in the spring term. For non-thesis candidates writing a research paper, the oral will constitute a defense of the scholarly paper. The supervisory committee may waive the oral follow-up for such candidates. Students should consult the Graduate Coordinator for details on the format of the examination and on criteria used in evaluating a candidate's performance.

  9. Current M.A. students include: Irene Moody, Sofia Dangond, Katie Donovan, Thomas Patterson, and Rachel Hart.
