Graduate Admissions for French
Detailed Lists of requirements are available for:
US citizen applicants
International applicants
Admission assumes an undergraduate major in French (30-36
upper-division semester credits in Language, Literature and
Civilization courses); an upper-division grade-point average of 3.0
or better, and satisfactory scores on the verbal and quantitative
sections of the Graduate Record Examination (combined total of
1000 for unconditional admission; conditional admission with scores
in the 900-1000 range).

Foreign applicants must present scores on the TOEFL (Test of
English as a Foreign Language) and on the TSE (Test of Spoken
English) if they wish to hold a teaching fellowship. Professor Baker
would also appreciate receiving a sample of your written French
(e.g., a copy of a term paper for a a course recently taken),
a sample of your oral French (a two-to-three minute cassette
recording of a prose passage) and a brief(typewritten) letter of
purpose. This letter should summarize your academic and non-academic
background (with special reference to the field of intended studies);
your aims and goals for graduate studies and professional future; and
any other factor that could be helpful to evaluate your application.
Once we have all the documentation, the Office of Admissions will
send us a referral on you, to which we will respond as promptly as
possible.
Foreign applicants must also provide proof of a financial
responsibility in the current amount of $22,060 per twelve-month
period for a total of two years (total: $44, 120). the salary of a
teaching assistant together with attendant fee waiver, can be
computed into this total. Assistantships and fellowships are
available on a competitive basis. The necessary application forms
will be mailed on request.
